Under Armour Goes Back to the Future
What do bat wings and helicopter blades have in common?
Both concepts hit the cutting room floor when Under Armour sought inspiration for its new running shoe. The design team wanted something lightweight but structured, flexible but rigid, said David Dombrow, Under Armour’s senior creative director of footwear. And then it hit them: What they were looking for was right in front, err, behind them the entire time: The back. “The human spine is really the most dynamic motion system ever created,” said Dombrow.
To make a sneaker that mimics the spine, Under Armour kept the signature foam footbed used in their other shoes but chiseled out excess rubber from the chassis, leaving vertebrae-like support along undercarriage. The result is a surprisingly sturdy sneaker that weighs in at 9.7 ounces.
Although the new—and aptly named—Spine RPM collection is still under wraps, Under Armour gave us a sneak peak. Here’s a better look at what the company is heralding as a revolutionary new design.
