Chew on This: Raisins Can Help Fuel Exercise
Endurance athletes often turn to packaged gels, energy chews or sports drinks for a quick boost, but lately real foods have been making a comeback. Just last month we heard that bananas can fuel workouts as well as energy drinks, and now raisins are getting their turn in the spotlight.
Eating raisins may provide the same energy jolt as sports chews, according to new research from the University of California Davis (which was partially funded by the California Raisin Marketing Board). The study compared the effect of raisins with that of manufactured carbohydrate supplements during running. The researchers found that runners who ate raisins or the sports chews could run a 5-K time trial a minute faster on average than participants who consumed only water before exercise. In addition to being on-par with energy chews, raisins also fill you up with fiber, potassium and iron, so you may want to think about grabbing a box ithe next time you head out on a long run.
