Tunesday: Bob Mould - "The Descent"
There are few bigger stars in the indie rock universe than Bob Mould. As front man for the seminal 80s band Hüsker Dü, he helped create the blueprint for the post-punk movement and influenced generations of bands to come. In the 90s, Mould moved on to front Sugar, and released one of the most critically acclaimed albums of the 90s, Copper Blue.
But the life of a career musician rarely lends itself to a life of good health. In a 2005 interview with A.V. Club, Mould talked about finally getting healthy in the late 90s:
I'd always been a big guy, I'd always been a generally athletic guy, but I'd never really tuned into my diet. I'd never really tuned into a workout routine. In '99, I got a trainer, started going to the gym every day, and dropped 55 pounds in four months, doing tons of cardio. I was working out two hours a day.
At 51, Mould seems to be showing no signs slowing down. He just released his tenth career solo album, Silver Age, to both critical and fan acclaim. (Editor’s note: I recently caught Mould playing both Copper Blue and Silver Age at Williamsburg Park in Brooklyn, and can fully attest to his continued healthy ways—he looks and sounds better than ever.) The album’s first single, “The Descent”, is a relentless, Sugar-esque blast of raw power-pop energy. Please feel free to honor its creator by dropping it on a mix for your high-intensity cardio routine.
