What Do Yoga and Wine Have in Common?
Does your go-to wind-down routine involve a glass of wine? You may be able to experience the same relaxation with yoga. Colleen Saidman, Director of Yoga Shanti studio in Sag Harbor, NY, teamed up with Estancia, a sutstainable winery in California, to give us a lesson on the similarities between wine and yoga, and how both can help you strike the perfect balance.
Winemaking is largely about taste and smell. What effect can yoga have on these senses?
After a class, smells and tastes are crisp. Even colors are more vivid when the veil of distraction is lifted as a result of a good yoga practice. I am an aromatherapist and work with essential oils, and believe the smell of wine can have similar effects. I have actually made oil blends that smell like some of the Estancia wines.
What smells and poses do you suggest for relaxation and to de-stress?
I recommend lavender and a restorative forward bend for relaxation. Sipping a glass of red wine can have a similar effect. If it's the evening and you still have to get things done, I would suggest doing a restorative backbend and placing peppermint on the back of your neck. You can also light some candles and sip an Estancia Pinot Noir.
How do you unwind?
Sometimes I deal with difficulty by locking myself in my room and meditating, and sometimes I crank up Led Zeppelin and sing along. Hopefully no one is around because I am slightly tone deaf!
