Wednesday Workout: Dynamic Warmup

Running outside is a great way to stay in shape—and sane—during these dark, winter months. But don't let the chilly air convince you to skip your warmup. Stepping out into frigid temperatures with cold, tight muscles can be a recipe for injury, says Doug Herron, director of The Alaska Running Academy in Anchorage. Instead of jumping right into your run, do this dynamic warmup inside, where you won't be rushed. "Warming up raises your heart rate, core temperature, and blood flow to your muscles, which minimizes the stress your body undergoes when you ask it to work hard in challenging conditions," says Herron.
