Overhead Barbell Squat for Men

Overhead Barbell Squat

  1. Stand holding a bar overhead with an overhand grip that's about twice shoulder width. Pull your shoulder blades together to keep the bar in line with or behind your ears throughout the move.
  2. As you lower your body into a squat, imagine pulling the bar apart and pushing up on it. Don't allow the bar to move forward as you lower your body. Pause when your thighs are parallel to the floor, then push yourself back to a standing position.

Tip Your arms should stay perpendicular to the floor for the entire lift. Your upper thighs should be parallel to the floor or lower.

Make it harder Trade the barbell for a pair of dumbbells.

This move has been excerpted from The Men's Health Big Book of Exercises by Adam Campbell.
