Fade Age Spots

Despite their name, age spots aren’t a result of aging—they’re actually caused by the sun, says Wu, explaining that they are much more common on the hands, face, and chest, areas where the skin is typically more exposed to UV rays.

To keep your body spot-free, slather on sunscreen each day and eat fruits and veggies to help replenish natural antioxidant stores, and protect sun-exposed skin from signs of aging and skin cancer, says Amy Wechsler, MD, a New York City dermatologist and author of The Mind-Beauty Connection. Foods rich in the antioxidants vitamins C and E are particularity important, as they help reduce cellular damage caused by free radicals, by-products of exposure to sunlight, cigarette smoke, alcohol, and air pollution.

Vitamin E is found in almonds, wheat germ oil, sunflower seeds, hazelnuts, peanuts, and peanut butter. And citrus fruits aren’t your only options for loading up on vitamin C, Wu says. “I recommend eating plenty of cooked tomatoes to fight sunburn and sun damage,” she says. “Go ahead and have that pizza—just get it with a thin crust, extra sauce, and grilled chicken for protein.” Strawberries, papaya, broccoli, kale, brussels sprouts, cantaloupe, kiwi, bell pepper, and cauliflower are all loaded with vitamin C.

Selenium, another antioxidant, can help reduce the effects of sun damage. The mineral is found in Brazil nuts, canned light tuna, cod, eggs, and chicken, and has been linked to reduced severity in cases of skin cancer. A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association showed that those who consumed 200 mcg of selenium per day (half an ounce of Brazil nuts has 272 mcg) reduced their risk of death from the disease by 50% and had 37% fewer malignancies.
