6 Health Trends We Love

Naysayers would have you convinced otherwise, but we see plenty of signs that our country isn’t destined to be fat

Calorie Counts Are Everywhere

Okay, so maybe you didn’t want to know that your banana-walnut muffin packed an eye-popping 460 calories or that a medium fries can saddle you with an additional 380 calories, but that sticker shock can be a much needed wakeup call. Americans are eating 600 calories a day more than they were 40 years ago, in part because we don’t know what we’re sticking in our mouths. New York City has required calorie counts to be listed on the menus of chain restaurants since 2008, and thanks to the health care reform bill, the rest of the nation will soon be following suit. While the effectiveness of these labeling laws is contested—a 2009 Yale and New York University study found that people consumed more fast food after the calorie counts were posted—newer evidence shows that people who take the time to read the information actually buy 106 calorie less than those who don’t read or use it.
