The Best and Worst Detox Diets

Before you order a detox online, read up on the facts behind the numbered juice cleanses, raw food diets, and gimmicky fasts

David Kirsch 48-Hour Super Charged Cleanse

Background: Used by celebrities such as Anne Hathaway and Liv Tyler, the David Kirsch 48-Hour Super Charged Cleanse is a fast, intense detox diet. Built around the philosophy “if you’re chewing, you’re cheating,” the liquid-only detox comes with instructions to sip slowly.

Detox DL: This plan is based on a bottled lemonade-like supplement that’s essentially a premade Master Cleanse with a few fancy add-ins. The mixture contains maple syrup and cayenne pepper, and actually tastes a bit like Crystal Light pink lemonade. In the past year, Kirsch added Fibersol-2, cranberry extract, milk thistle seed extract, and acai fruit extract to his formulation because of their reported powers to increase feelings of fullness and flush out your liver and kidneys. Over the course of 48 hours, you drink half a cup of the lemonade supplement mixed with equal parts water four times a day. (Learn a healthier way to get max nutrition on fewer calories.)

Calories: 80 calories per day. (The drink contains some maple syrup, but derives most of its sweetness from calorie-free stevia.)

Price: $29.99 for a bottle that lasts 2 days

Pros: You don’t have to mix your own Master Cleanse.

Cons: There’s no way that living on 80 calories a day—the equivalent of one banana—is good for anyone. Aside from turning you into the Wicked Witch of the West, starving your body can cause tons of terrible side effects. Extreme diets result in muscle loss and a slower metabolism.

Verdict: Skip this dressed-up version of the Master Cleanse. It doesn’t matter how slowly you sip your juice, an 80-calorie diet isn’t safe or healthy. Even Kirsch’s 5-Day Detox, which includes two protein shakes, one meal a day, and supplements, is still quite low in calories at 800 per day. “Going this low for a couple of days won’t hurt you, but it is probably not necessary either,” says Glassman, with regards to the longer cleanse. If you do decide to go with the 5-Day Detox, add an additional snack of nuts, she suggests.
