Can These “Skinny” Chicks Help You Lose?

Our expert cross-checks the advice of professional skinny people with scientifically proven ways to lose weight

Skinny Bitch

In their straight-shooting, tough-love, and occasionally scary, guides to eating, Skinny Bitch and Skinny Bastard authors Rory Freedman and Kim Barnouin essentially advocate a vegan diet (Search: What are the benefits of going vegan?). The former Ford Models agent and former model want you to stop eating “crap,” which includes meat, dairy, eggs, and all processed foods, and to start eating fruit, veggies, and soy.

The Skinny: Some of the book’s more frightening claims, such as the idea that all milk and eggs contain hormones and pesticides that can cause disease and promote weight gain, are not backed by science. In fact, some research shows that low-fat dairy may actually facilitate weight loss. Another major red flag with this program is that it eliminates whole food groups, which can shortchange you on nutrients and might make you less likely to stick with the plan over time. Given that most Americans eat too much sugar, salt, and fat in general, cutting out processed foods and eating more fruits and veggies is a good idea. While going vegan isn’t for everyone, making a major lifestyle modification can serve as a dramatic wake-up call to break unhealthy habits and help jump-start weight loss, says Sari Greaves, RD, and nutrition director of Step Up Weight Loss Center in central New Jersey.
