You Eat and Drink from Plastic and Cans
If you need one more reason to go green, this may be it. The European Congress on Obesity has linked exposure to obsenogens, chemicals that disguise themselves as hormones and wreck havoc on your body’s endocrine system, with being overweight.
One such endocrine disruptor is Bisphenol A, which leaches into the body from foods and beverages sold in cans or plastic containers. A report from the Journal of the American Medical Association linked BPA with type 2 diabetes and abnormalities in liver enzymes, and another recent study found that 92% of canned foods—brand-name products like fish, soup, and soda purchased from retail stores in the U.S. and Canada—contained detectable levels of BPA.
Regular exposure to BPA suppresses the release of the hormone adiponectin, leading to insulin resistance and obesity, suggests a study in Environmental Health Perspectives. Researchers at Harvard University and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that when people drank out of polycarbonate bottles, like hard plastic drinking containers, baby bottles, and sippy cups, for seven days that they increased the levels of BPA in their bodies by nearly 70%.
To make sure obsenogens aren’t making you fat, sip water from a glass or drink coffee or tea from a paper cup. Choose BPA-free food storage and never heat food in plastic containers or wash them in the dishwasher, as high temps up BPA’s leaching power. Steer clear of canned food and drinks, especially those with high acidity, like tomatoes, soda, and beer, which also speeds up leaching.
