After years of embracing a “bigger is better” philosophy, it seems like the tide might be shifting. Look for a surge in tapas, small-plate meals, and half-portions in the upcoming year, predicts the National Restaurant Association’s annual survey.
Behind the Hype: While half-portions at discounted prices can make controlling portion sizes easier, tapas are a little more risky when it comes to managing your weight. “People tend to overeat tapas because they don’t feel like they’ve had a whole meal after a plate or two,” says Gans. “There’s no guarantee that people won’t overdo it.”
