First, the bad news: If your plans for fall are limited to curling up on the couch and watching a new season of TV, you could add inches to your waistline and put yourself at risk for long-term health problems. According to the American Medical Association, watching television for 2 to 3 hours per day could increase your risk of acquiring type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, and has been linked to early death from all causes. Time in front of the tube displaces physical activities, and TV viewing is also associated with unhealthy eating. Distracted dining leads couch potatoes to forget about portion control, ignore cues that they’re feeling full, and eat unhealthy foods later in the day. Couple those effects with indulgent choices like a sleeve of Oreos or a bag of chips and you’re bound to do major damage to your diet.

That said, you can still catch Modern Family (and have a snack too!) if you arm yourself with nutritious, portion-controlled munchies. Here are five options, recommended by Marisa Moore, RD, that can make your nighttime couch stint a little healthier.
