Venice Marathon, Padua and Venice, Italy-October 28, 2012

Distances: Full marathon, half-marathon

The Venice marathon starts in the Renaissance town of Padua, Italy, and follows along the Brenta River on the way to the island of Venice. The first 18 miles of the race twist and turn along the Brenta between Padua and Mestre before hitting the Grand Canal that separates the Italian mainland from the 117-island Venetian Lagoon. The picturesque, romantic canals, gondolas and gondoliers, and glorious coastal views of Venice are the backdrop for the final 6 miles of this pancake flat run. Once onto the island, racers roll along the southern side of Venice and the shores of the Adriatic Sea, making a minor inland detour through the café-lined Piazza San Marco. With average temps hovering in the mid-60s in Venice during the fall and a route with more than half its miles along the water, this annual Italian race is truly bellissima.
