That’s the mantra Tim Tebow has placed on his wall, poached from a March Madness commercial he watched in the ’90s as a kid. In the clip, little kids shot free throws into hoops around the globe, while Duke University men’s basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski narrated the scenes—and spoke straight into Tebow’s young, driven soul.

Tebow preferred flinging the pigskin to handling the rock, but Coach K’s words inspired him all the same: Growing up, he knew he wanted to be a quarterback, and even if coaches told him his body was better suited to being a tight end or linebacker, he’d stop at nothing to meet his goal. Some early critics questioned if Tebow could even play football at all, since he’d been home-schooled by his parents in the suburbs of Jacksonville. But then all he did was propel his town’s high school to a state title, receive Florida’s Player of the Year honors, and earn a scholarship to play at the University of Florida—as a QB.

If you’ve watched ESPN for even 10 seconds in the last 6 years, you know the rest of Tebow’s story by heart: After one of the most brilliant college careers ever (including two national championships at Florida and one Heisman Trophy), Tebow was drafted in the first round by the Denver Broncos in 2010, played his way to the starting job in 2011, captured the adoration of fans and the media with a string of thrilling fourth-quarter comebacks, and spawned his own mega-popular meme (“Tebowing”) in the process. Earlier this year, Denver shipped Tebow to the New York Jets, where he now rides the bench behind an embattled quarterback in Mark Sanchez, waiting for his chance to start and create some more on-field magic. The question isn’t if Tebow will take over the reins in the Big Apple this season—it’s when.
